Q: Who is eligible to receive VA disability benefits?
To be eligible to receive VA disability benefits, you must have a diagnosed medical condition caused or influenced during military service. If you have a current illness or injury influenced by serving in the military that affects your mind or body, you are eligible to receive VA disability.
At least one of these must be true:
- You got sick or injured while serving in the military—and can link this condition to your illness or injury (called an in-service disability claim), or
- You had an illness or injury before you joined the military—and serving made it worse (called a preservice disability claim), or
- You have a disability-related to your active-duty service that didn’t appear until after you ended your service (called a postservice disability claim)

Q: What is a disability that is influenced by the service?
A disability that is considered influenced by the service is those you can prove occurred as a direct result of active military service. These can be conditions that you had before serving in which was made worse from active duty.
Q: What mental disorders are eligible for VA compensation claims?
Eight categories of mental disorders are eligible for VA disability compensation:
- Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders
- Delirium, Dementia, and Amnestic and Other Cognitive Disorders
- Anxiety Disorders
- Dissociative Disorders
- Somatoform Disorders (A disorder where a person has certain physical symptoms of a medical condition, but tests do not reveal that they actually have that condition)
- Mood Disorders
- Chronic Adjustment Disorder
- Eating Disorder
